Midland Metals Limited
FAQ's

Here at Midland Metals Limited, we take our environmental responsibilities very seriously.

We are fully compliant with Duty of Care regulations and relevant site and waste carriers’ licences, with full traceability for auditing purposes.

By law, sites must be registered with the local authority as scrap metal dealers, under the Scrap Metal Dealer Act (SMDA).

We must record the following details on all purchase tickets

  • Description and weight of scrap received
  • Date and time of scrap received
  • Full name and address of the customer supplying the scrap
  • An in-date copy of a photo Driving Licence or Passport
  • The price paid for the scrap
  • The registration number of the vehicle delivering the scrap

Cashless trading came into force in December 2012 as part of the implementation of the updated Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishing of Offenders Act, 2012.

The Act banned the use of cash in the trading of all scrap metal within England and Wales. It is now an offense to pay people in cash.

The new Scrap Metal Dealers Act (SMDA) came into effect in Autumn 2013. At that time Itinerant Collectors and Vehicle Dismantlers will be wholly subject to the cash ban.

The new SMDA will also make the necessity for identification, at point of sale, a legal condition.

To assist in tackling local metal theft, we have putting the following additional internal checks into place.

  • We will always ask for Identification
  • Foot Traffic and taxis are not allowed onto the premises and will be turned away
  • If a customer is not known/or we have any suspicion as to the origin of the goods, we will ask for details of the source of the material
  • If appropriate Identification cannot be produced, you will be turned away and asked to return with suitable identification
  • We do not accept any branded cable or beer kegs, unless in accordance with established producers of such material
  • If we believe goods may be stolen, you will be turned away and we will contact the local police

None of these additional steps are intended to discourage our traditional and repeat customers, or to adversely impact on business. However, we have to act legally and protect our business reputation. It is not in our interests or the community in which we operate, to encourage those who may have acted criminally.

Our policy is applied using the simple premise:

If in doubt, turn away

We are here to assist you
