Household Scrap

If you are not a business/tradesman, but an individual with household scrap metal waste that you would like to recycle then our yard here in Loughborough can help!

If you have a small amount of household scrap metal waste, then you can bring it down to our yard on Bishop Meadow Road, we do not operate an appointment system so feel free to pop down – you will need to be in your own vehicle as we do not accept items from people on foot or in taxis

Our opening times are Monday – Friday 9am – 4pm and Saturdays 9am – 12pm

Unfortunately, at this time we don’t offer a collection service for small items (under a tonne of weight) but we are looking to change this in the future……watch this space!

We pay for your items based on the current market price for that day, you may wish to give us a call on the day to check the prices

You must bring an appropriate form of person identification with you as well, we need to record all information of the transaction

The ID documents we can accept are as follow:

If your photo ID does not have a current address, it MUST be accompanied by proof of address which must be less than 3 months old – such as:

How do I know what type of household scrap metal I have?

The easiest way to determine what type of metal is the “Magnet Test”

If a magnet sticks to the metal item then it is Steel or Iron, referred to as “Ferrous Metal”

Common Types of Ferrous Metal are:

  • Steel – cars body parts, filing cabinets, shelving, trampoline frames, Used cans
  • Iron – decorative items such as gates, fencing, tools

If a magnet does not stick to the metal item, it will typically be copper, aluminium, brass or stainless steel, all referred to as “Non-Ferrous Metal”

Common types of Non-Ferrous Metal are:

  • Copper – Pipes from old / new plumbing, old hot water cylinders, cooking pans
  • Aluminium – Used food cans, window frames, cooking pans
  • Brass – Door handles, taps, ornaments / decorative items

While we do not currently offer a pickup service, we still accept used kitchen appliances if homeowners can bring them down to the yard

  • Washing Machines
  • Dryers
  • Dishwashers

There are some items that we cannot accept, such as:

  • Pressurized containers – propane, aerosols, or fire extinguishers
  • Hazardous, corrosive, explosive or radioactive items
  • WEEE – Waste Electrical & Electronic Equipment
  • Fridges & freezers
  • Scrap Cars / Vehicles

What you need to know about Metal Theft and our policy to tackle it

Cashless trading came into force in December 2012 as part of the implementation of the updated Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishing of Offenders Act, 2012.

The Act banned the use of cash in the trading of all scrap metal within England and Wales. It is now an offense to pay people in cash.

The new Scrap Metal Dealers Act (SMDA) came into effect in Autumn 2013. At that time Itinerant Collectors and Vehicle Dismantlers will be wholly subject to the cash ban.

The new SMDA will also make the necessity for identification, at point of sale, a legal condition.

To assist in tackling local metal theft, we have putting the following additional internal checks into place.

  • We will always ask for Identification
  • Foot Traffic and taxis are not allowed onto the premises and will be turned away
  • If a customer is not known/or we have any suspicion as to the origin of the goods, we will ask for details of the source of the material
  • If appropriate Identification cannot be produced, you will be turned away and asked to return with suitable identification
  • We do not accept any branded cable or beer kegs, unless in accordance with established producers of such material
  • If we believe goods may be stolen, you will be turned away and we will contact the local police

None of these additional steps are intended to discourage our traditional and repeat customers, or to adversely impact on business. However, we have to act legally and protect our business reputation. It is not in our interests or the community in which we operate, to encourage those who may have acted criminally.

Our Policy is applied using the simple premise: If in doubt, turn away

We are here to assist you
